Passing the CDL permit test is the first step in the process of obtaining a commercial driver's license. While most motorists are traveling for work, pleasure, or personal need - a CDL identifies a driver as someone whose workplace is the road and who has the ability and attitude of a professional in their field. For this reason, the attaining of a CDL must demand knowledge, skill and a physical acumen of a higher standard than the private driver. With a permit, the driver is able to practice in the type of vehicle he or she will be driving.

In order to be able to practice driving a commercial vehicle, a CDL Instruction Permit is necessary. The applicant must apply for a CDL Instruction Permit through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the test can be administered at most FLHSMV offices throughout the state. Check the website below for your nearest office and call before visiting to check that the office can issue CDL Permits.

The applicant will be required to provide their current Driver’s License, a Department of Transportation Physical Examination Form, and their social security card. There is no cost for this permit and the applicant can pick up a copy of the Florida CDL Manual free of charge to study in preparation for the test. In addition to the CDL manual, there are many online practice tests for the Florida CDL permit. eGears offers an online CDL test with sample questions and answers that are on the actual CDL exam to help improve an applicant's chances of passing on the first try.

Although there are a variety of questions available to make up each test, the total number of questions in any exam is forty (40). Given the necessity of maintaining a high level of expertise among professional drivers, satisfactorily passing the test will require a score no lower than 80% or 32 correct answers.

Having attained a CDL Instruction Permit, it is valid for six months, with the option to renew for a further six months. It is important to understand that it is compulsory to hold a CDL Instruction Permit to be eligible for a Commercial Driver’s License.

In addition to the CDL permit test, other written knowledge tests may need to be passed to obtain CDL endorsements (depending on the job requirements). Learn more about CDL endorsements in Florida on the next page.
