Indiana CDL requirements determine who can legally obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) from Indiana. Learn how to get an Indiana CDL by meeting DOT medical requirements and passing written tests and a CDL driving test. A professional driver must demonstrate that he or she has the safety, knowledge and skill to operate a commercial vehicle for extended periods of time. This begins for the prospective CDL driver even before they approach an Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) License Branch. All applicants must make sure they meet the major requirements associated with passing the 'DOT Physical' medical examination before a CDL can be issued.

If there is any doubt about passing this examination, then this should be addressed prior to moving forward with obtaining an Indiana CDL. While this is a thorough medical examination, the most common elements of concern are a satisfactory standard of hearing, 20/40 vision (with or without corrective lenses), a 70-degree field of vision in each eye and proof that the applicant is not colorblind.

However, it is important to view the whole form as other matters that can lead to exclusion from a CDL will be assessed. Indiana CDL applicants should be aware of this prior to the exam. Please take the time to review this form which is available online at:

www.in.gov/dor/4195.htm

There is no point in moving through the process only to be denied by a medical examination, so it is worth either passing the medical examination in the earlier stages or at least checking the areas that will be assessed to be sure that it will not present a problem down the road.

All licensed Commercial Drivers will be required to pass a similar examination every two years in order to maintain their CDL.

Once you’re sure you can meet the medical requirements, the next step in the process of obtaining a CDL is getting your permit. Read more about the CDL permit test here - Indiana CDL Permit.
