CDL Permit Tests

The Kentucky State Police oversee the CDL and administers the written CDL tests for permits and endorsements for the Division of Driver Licensing . Before you can take any CDL tests, you must submit a Commercial Driver Licensing application. The KY CDL application fee is $24 (KY school bus CDL is only $9). The cost of a CDL permit in Kentucky is just $11. The Kentucky State Police will give the tests at local exam stations through the state. Contact your local Circuit Court Clerk’s office for the schedule. The number of written tests you must pass to receive a permit depends on the type of CDL you wish to obtain.

To get a CDL permit you must first pass the following written tests:

The road test is administered by the Kentucky State Police and must be scheduled in advance by calling 800-542-5990. The exam includes a pre-trip inspection, basic control skills and road driving. The cost of the road test is $50 and you must furnish the proper CDL vehicle for testing. If you fail the skills test, you can re-take up to 4 times without additional cost.
